When you’re ready to adventure off, the hardest part will be deciding where to head first. Hike along sea cliffs or among ancient Hawaiian temples known as “heiau,” or traverse a 500-year-old trail from the mountains to the ocean. Walk to the Kaluakoi Golf Course for 18 holes that will take you from the sea up to an overlook of rolling green hillsides. A short drive will take you to Old Maunaloa Town, once a pineapple plantation village and now home to the Big Wind Kite Factory, Plantation Gallery, and the island’s only movie theaters. For some high-spirited rodeo action, there’s the nearby Molokai Ranch. Let the Hawaiian cowboys, or “paniolo,” get you saddled up, or just sit back and enjoy the spectacle of their remarkable skill. For a slightly different experience, take a guided mule ride down to the isolated Kalaupapa, once the site of a famous leper colony. Just 30 minutes away from the Kaluakoi Villas is the rustic town of Kauanakakai, which looks as if it were taken straight from the Old West and then given a healthy dose of Hawaii. Wander through this old town’s main street, and browse the shops and the Kamakana Fine Art Gallery for the island’s largest selection of authentic arts and crafts. Whether you’re here to experience old Hawaii, explore the great outdoors, or simply absorb Molokai's exquisite beauty, it’s all real, and it’s all yours.
