Maui Activities & Attractions
To list all Maui activities would be impossible, so here are some of the highlights. Let’s begin at the summit of Haleakala, most breathtaking at sunrise or sunset. Take an exhilarating bike ride down the volcano, or drive and stop at the lookouts and lunch spots on your way down. Come in for a landing at Hookipa Beach, one of the windsurfing capitals of the world, where you’ll be in for quite a show. An ingredient for yet another perfect day is a drive along the rainforest cliffs on the road to Hana. Go slow and explore along the way. Discover black, white and red sand beaches for soaking up the sun and secluded pools to cool off. There are series of waterfalls fed by streams that lead to spot known as Seven Sacred Pools, or Oheo Gulch Pools. It’s an unbelievably peaceful spot, as if torn from the pages of a storybook, where you sun on the rocks and swim.
Hike through beautiful black lava fields on Maui’s South Shore just inland from La Perouse Bay where you can go snorkeling afterward. This protected bay is part of the Ahihi Kinau Natural Area Reserve and is also great spot for diving. For even more marine life, keep going to the Maui Ocean Center at Maalaea. West Maui is where you’ll find some of the most luxurious beaches, among them Kapalua, Napili, and Kaanapali. Legendary Black Rock is the prime Maui snorkeling spot on Kaanapali Beach, where you’ll see sea turtles, bright coral, and a kaleidoscope of fish. Stick around for the torch lighting ceremony at sunset. One of the best spots for Maui snorkeling and swimming is Makena Beach, or “Big Beach.” And big it is at two-thirds of a mile long and over 100 yards wide. Mountain and valley lovers shouldn’t miss Iao Valley, a hidden paradise where an ancient stone pillar begs to be photographed.
World-class Maui golf anyone? Spectacular views are par for the course. Ocean panoramas. Awesome mountains. Striking lava outcrops. They’re all part of the game here. For a coconut tree-lined challenge, try Elleair Golf Course in Kihei. Or if playing through ancient, wooded sand dunes appeals, go five miles inland from Kahului Harbor and you’ll find Robin Nelson’s The Dunes at Maui Lani.
